Not sure how to publish your book? This post breaks down the three main publishing paths—self-publishing, traditional, and hybrid—so you can choose the one that aligns with your goals, timeline, and message. Plus, grab the free Publishing Path Cheat Sheet to guide your next step.

You’ve probably heard there are “lots of ways” to publish a book.
But when you’re just getting started, “lots of ways” can feel overwhelming.

Should you self-publish?
Query a traditional publisher?
Explore hybrid options?

Let’s break it down in plain terms—so you can choose the path that fits you best.

🔹 Path 1: Self-Publishing

This is the most accessible option for new authors—and the most empowering when done professionally.

✅ Pros:

  • Full creative control
  • Faster publishing timeline
  • Higher royalties per sale
  • Ideal for authors with a message, movement, or business

❌ Consider:

  • You’ll manage the process (or hire someone to help)
  • Upfront investment required for editing, design, and layout
  • Marketing is fully your responsibility

Best for you if: You’re ready to lead the process and want to get your book out into the world on your timeline.

🔹 Path 2: Traditional Publishing

This is the route where you pitch your book to an agent or publishing house.

✅ Pros:

  • No upfront costs to publish
  • Established distribution channels
  • Some external credibility, especially in nonfiction and fiction markets

❌ Consider:

  • Requires a strong book proposal and/or agent
  • Extremely competitive
  • You lose creative control (title, cover, content can be changed)
  • The timeline is often 18–24 months (or more)

Best for you if: You’re not in a rush, you’re willing to go through a lengthy proposal process, and you don’t mind giving up some control.

🔹 Path 3: Hybrid Publishing

A professional publishing model that blends elements of self and traditional. You invest in services, but retain creative control.

✅ Pros:

  • Strategic guidance without the gatekeeping
  • Professional production quality
  • Retain your rights and vision
  • Ideal for mission-driven entrepreneurs, coaches, and creatives

❌ Consider:

  • Involves a financial investment (usually $3,000–$10,000+)
  • Marketing is still author-driven
  • Quality varies—vet your publisher carefullyIdeal for mission-driven entrepreneurs, coaches, and creatives

Best for you if: You want high-quality publishing with expert support but don’t want to go the traditional route.

So... Which One Fits You Best?

Ask yourself:

  • How quickly do I want to publish?
  • How much creative control matters to me?
  • Am I willing to invest financially or in time and energy?
  • Do I want to use this book to grow my brand, business, or platform?

There’s no one “right” path. But there is a right one for where you are right now.
